Day 2 at the World Freestyle Championships
By Ken Whiting and Kevin Varette
June 26, 2001

Tuesday saw the 3 largest classes hit the water for preliminary action (Junior Men, Women's K1, and Men's K1). The junior Men had the pace set yesterday by the first four heats, and it was obvious that to be one of the 20 quarter finalists, there could be no holds barred. The US 'Adventure Quest' team came out with a vengeance, and took the top spots of the day with some truly impressive rides. The quarter finals will take place on Thursday.

The Women, not surprisingly, also came out armed and dangerous. Julie Dion and Debs Pinneger set the stage early with phenomenal performances. Julie threw end after end, broken up by some picture perfect splitwheels, while Debs threw the most impressive vertical cartwheel sequences in the whole competition. In the end though, Erica Mitchell came through on top with an inspiring run. A true feat considering that Erica just arrived 2 days ago to replace the injured Aleta Miller of the US.

The day ended with the first 3 heats of Men's K1. Ken Whiting took over in the 2nd heat with 2 solid runs, maximizing on his technical and variety score. EJ was close behind with a classic EJ performance, full of aerial and trophy moves (while smiling at the judges of course!) The remaining 27 men's heats will occupy the full day tomorrow providing some awesome entertainment.

EJ takes air!

Ken Whiting takes air... a great battle has begun!!!

Stay tuned for the Men's prelims results… 40 of the 150 Men will move on to the quarter finals.
